Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Heat and Dust presents India through a complex interplay of colonial memory, cultural encounter, and Western perception. The novel repeatedly portrays India as an exotic, mysterious, and spiritually charged land through its landscapes, climate, religion, customs, and social life, reflecting many of the characteristics associated with Edward Said's concept of Orientalism. At the same time, it exposes the limitations of the colonial gaze by revealing how British characters interpret India through inherited assumptions, fascination, and cultural distance. The parallel narratives of Olivia and the unnamed narrator illustrate how Orientalist perceptions persist across different historical periods, shaping their understanding of Indian people and culture. By analysing the representation of Indian men and women, religious practices, climate, and colonial spaces such as the Civil Lines, the study demonstrates that the novel both reproduces and questions Orientalist stereotypes. Rather than offering a fixed image of India, Heat and Dust reveals the complex relationship between representation, power, and identity, positioning itself as an important text in postcolonial literary discourse.
