This study examines the impact of the composition of public expenditure on economic growth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model based on timeseries data. It is grounded in endogenous growth theories and emphasizes the distinction between capital (investment) expenditure and current expenditure. The empirical findings reveal the existence of a long-run relationship between public expenditure and economic growth. Investment expenditure has a positive, significant, and lasting effect on growth, whereas current expenditure exerts a negative or weak impact. The study also confirms the complementary role of private investment and trade openness in fostering economic growth. Furthermore, it highlights the crucial importance of institutional quality in enhancing the effectiveness of public spending. The error correction mechanism indicates a rapid convergence toward the long-run equilibrium. In conclusion, reorienting public expenditure toward productive investments is essential for promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
