Identity and Access Management (IAM) is fundamental to organizational security strategy. Factors like increasing users and system complexity make access control administration increasingly difficult. Further managing access for different types of users like employees, future dated employees, contractors, vendors, suppliers, alumni make the access controls further complicated. Traditional IAM solutions often fail to address complex scenarios in today's organizations facing sophisticated security attacks. The evolution of work methods, including mobility, cloud computing, and collaborative platforms, requires adaptation of access control systems. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized IAM through advanced techniques enabling instant and continuous authentication and access control, as this paper explores. The paper provides an IAM systems overview, examines AI tools for biometric authentication and dynamic access control based on existing literature, and analyzes privacy, security threats, ethics and laws. Finally, it presents a synthesis of existing works to contribute to understanding AI's application in access control, examining its benefits, threats, and future implications.
