📝 Abstract
Reliance on wood, charcoal, fossil fuels and grid dependent electric cookers contributes to indoor air pollution, deforestation, and unreliable energy access, particularly in off grid and rural communities. This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental evaluation of an Internet of Things (IoT)- enabled solar powered Direct Current (DC) cooking plate developed as a sustainable, remotely monitored alternative to conventional cooking systems. The prototype integrates a 420 W photovoltaic (PV) array, a solar charge controller, a 12 V/7 Ah auxiliary battery, a 12 V/200 W DC heating element, current, voltage and temperature sensing circuits, a power MOSFET switching stage, and an ESP32 microcontroller that provides local display through a liquid crystal display (LCD) and remote monitoring and control through a Wi-Fi based IoT interface. Design calculations were used to size the heating element, sensing circuits, switching device, battery, DC-DC converter, and photovoltaic array, and the resulting prototype was assembled and tested. Experimental results obtained over two independent monitoring periods show that the system continuously acquired and transmitted voltage, current, instantaneous power, and accumulated energy readings to the IoT platform, confirming correct operation of the sensing, switching, and communication subsystems. The results demonstrate the feasibility of combining solar energy harvesting with IoT based monitoring and control for low voltage DC cooking applications and indicate the need for extended field trials to characterize long term performance.
