📝 Abstract
Traditional cross-cultural management is widely viewed as a subfield of international management. It primarily examines cultural interactions between two supposedly stable and uniform entities: the business organization and the nation-state. In this perspective, cultural differences are typically treated as obstacles that lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, or communication breakdowns, and the discipline offers practical tools and frameworks to manage or mitigate these isues. However, this conventional approach appears increasingly outdated in today's dynamic global business environment. Modern transnational corporations operate through complex global knowledge networks and diverse multicultural project teams. These teams collaborate intensively across geographical, organizational, and cultural boundaries, supported by advanced communication technologies that enable real-time interaction and knowledge sharing. The authors contend that there is a pressing need for a fresh theoretical perspective. This new approach should better reflect the fluid and multifaceted nature of contemporary organizations, where cultural influences are not confined to national borders but emerge from multiple overlapping sources. It must address the growing complexity of both inter-organizational and intra-organizational relationships, as well as the hybrid identities that individuals and groups develop in globalized settings. By introducing alternative theoretical concepts, this perspective enables scholars and practitioners to rethink how organizations engage with multiple cultures. It shifts the focus from managing “cultural differences” as problems toward understanding culture as dynamic, negotiated, and embedded in everyday global business practices.
