πŸ“ Abstract
Hero stones constitute an important category of commemorative monuments in the historical archaeology of India. Known by regional terms such as VΔ«ragallu in Kannada, VΔ«rakkal or Nadukal in Tamil, and related memorial-stone traditions elsewhere, these monuments commemorate individuals whose deaths were considered socially significant, particularly deaths in warfare, cattle protection, village defence, hunting and other forms of heroic action. South India, especially Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, contains an extensive corpus of sculptured hero stones. Northern and north-western India developed regionally distinctive memorial traditions, including the memorial stones of Rajasthan associated with warrior commemoration and social memory. This article compares selected hero-stone traditions of South and North India through geographical distribution, chronology, materials, sculptural programmes, inscriptions, religious symbolism and social function. The study argues that Indian hero stones represent a family of regional memorial traditions rather than a single uniform monument type.
