📝 Abstract
The field of cosmology seeks to determine the underlying nature of the universe's origin and evolution. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), a relic radiation field throughout all of space, serves as direct observable evidence of the early universe. To solve enigmas in the standard cosmological model, the theory of cosmic inflation was introduced, which posits that the universe underwent a rapid, quasi-exponential expansion. This violent expansion is expected to have amplified quantum fluctuations in the spacetime metric, giving rise to a background of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). These "tremors in space-time," predicted by Albert Einstein, are considered the "smoking gun" for inflation. Though too small to be directly measured today, their signature can be identified indirectly through the unique imprint they leave on the polarization pattern of the CMB. A conclusive detection would provide compelling evidence for cosmic inflation and unveil a new window into physics at an energy scale a trillion times higher than that accessible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This article synthesizes the current state of this search, from theoretical foundations and observational challenges to the profound implications of this transformative inquiry.
